Chastity … is the necessary pre-condition to any kind of moral life superior to that of the animal. At the same time, the energy created by chastity has a natural tendency to be, on the whole, more evil than good. By fulfilling the conditions upon which, and upon which alone, the higher moral life is possible, we transform our nature in such a way that it becomes easier for us to behave immorally than to behave morally.

'Tis chastity, my brother, chastity:
She that has that, is clad in compleat steel,
And like a quiver'd Nymph with Arrows keen
May trace huge Forests, and unharbour'd Heaths,
Infamous Hills, and sandy perilous wilds,
Where through the sacred rays of Chastity,
No savage, fierce, Bandit, or mountaineer
Will dare to soil her Virgin Purity.

And now you are to be mine! Now I am about to experience celestial joy on earth! I see you as a young wife, then a young mother, but always the same Adele, as adoring and adored in the chastity of married life as in the virgin days of your first love.

The little respect paid to chastity in the male world is, I am persuaded, the grand source of many of the physical and moral evils that torment mankind, as well as of the vices and follies that degrade and destroy women.

The Duchess of Ormonde promised me her picture, and coming home to-night I found hers and the Duke's both in my chamber. Was not that a pretty civil surprise? Yes, and they are in fine gilded frames too. I am writing her a letter to thank her, which I will send to-morrow morning. I will tell her she is such a prude that she will not let so much as her picture be alone in a room with a man unless the duke's be with it.

There was a young lady named Wylde
Who kept herself quite undefiled
By thinking of Jesus
Contagious diseases,
And the bother of having a child.

I had prayed to you for chastity and said, "Give me chastity and continence but not yet." For I was afraid that you would answer my prayer at once and cure me too soon of the disease of lust, which I want satisfied, but not quelled.

Chastity without charity lies chained in hell:
It is but an unlighted lamp.
Many chaplains are chaste, but where is their charity?
There are no harder, hungrier men than men of the Church.
